What About Protesting in The South Suburb?

HA officials have spent all yesterday "warning" March 14th from protesting in the Martyrs Square, since this would escalate the situation and lead to uncontrolled violent acts.

They also said that "There are many squares in Liban for March 14th to protest in". I agree that if March 8th supporters stayed in the Martyrs Square till February 14th, it wouldn't be safe for March 14th to protest there, since we all know the uprising tension between the two sides, and it's almost impossible to prevent clashes of two huge masses siting next to each other.

So, where should March 14th protest? I think the best area would be "da7ieh l jnoubieh" "The Southern Suburb". HA used to hold huge masses in the main square there, and now since HA supporters are busy in the Martyrs Square, the square at the "da7ieh" would be convenient. March 14th can also make tents there, and who knows, maybe burn some tires. In short, they can do all the "peaceful" acts of protesting just like March 8th are doing in Martyrs Square.

Last time I checked, the square there is a public space, and March 14th can protest there. And since March 8th is a peaceful democratic movement, then they wouldn't mind letting their political rivals "express" their opinion in the "da7ieh", would they?

And, in order for March 14th to avoid accusation of being "un-national", the Christian wing of March 14th can hold a similar protest at Zgharta's main square. Of course, no escalation would take place, since it is a democratic way of expressing opinion that the constitution approves.

I don't think the March 14 leadership would dare do it. I agree with you that it would be excellent to "peacefully" meet in the Dahiyeh, but it is wishfull thinking... Too bad our people lack what it needs... I hope however that they will do manifest on the 14th of February...

Nice post, you wrote exactly what many of us think! but hey can we sink that low (i.e. to their level)???

mmmmmmmm,
why would such a step be considered as "a law level"??!!

It's a free country, and as i recall, HA never clamied that it has its own areas where others are NOT allowed to come, right?

Besides, maybe when we have such sit-in in Da7ieh, people there will start to realize that we ain't Israeli's agents, and we are as Lebanese as they are, but simply with different point of view :)

so you want March 14 to go to dahiye, a traditionally HA quarters, because March 8 is sitting in martyr's square that is... what?? i thought solidere and beirut were for all of us. i missed the day where el sett nayla mouad and fares souaid or Big Goatee put the square in march 14's name!
but the main thing is: lezim kelloun yerja3o 3ala baytoun! 8 w 14 w 29 (that;s my party!!) w stop those pseudo-democratic collections of brain washed militants. the solution is not there. if riad solh was going to be an inspiration he would have spoken long time ago...

maya@nyc,
my point exactly. Both sides have "abused" the meaning of protesting. And it's about time we understand that solutions can't be found there :)

We should go back to the constitutional institutions. As 14th realized they can't topple Lahhoud, 8th should realize they can't opple the government. And BOTH of them sould relaize that they can't eliminate one another, or claim that any of them has "more popularity".

WAIT....WASN'T IT NASRALLAH THAT WARNED FOR MARCH 14 TO TAKE IT ELSEWHERE? I DON'T RECALL MARCH 14 MAKING SUCH STATEMENTS WHILE PROTESTING LAST YEAR. OBVIOUSLY HE BELIEVES THAT HE OWNS THE SQUARES.
I AGREE THAT THE PROTESTING SHOULD STOP, BUT THE OPPOSITION NEEDS TO STOP THE HOOLIGAN BEHAVIOR AND GROW UP.
